Manhattan | New York, Part 1 of 3

What is there to say about New York City that hasn’t already been said? Perhaps the more you come to New York or the longer you live here, the more the city envelops you. Those who are less optimistic might say it swallows you whole. I usually set my own pace on trips, no matter the destination. At times I’ve happily contradicted the characterization of New York as a bustling concrete jungle, but this time I was somehow swept up in it all– at least for these first couple days of my trip. With days packed from 9am to 3am with activities and New York-paced walking, I was much busier on this trip than I ever am in my regular weeks at home. But happily so, of course.

Some scenes from Manhattan below:

A Friday afternoon visit to the MoMA.

After visits to both Manhattan’s and Brooklyn’s Chinatowns, I rushed back to Carnegie Hall to hear famed opera singer Elina Garanca– Talya’s idol. Afterward, I followed Talya backstage where she got to meet Elina and tell her the story of how she broke her ankle in Elina’s home town of Riga, Latvia while studying opera there on a Fullbright scholarship… true story.

Talya has promised to take me with her when she becomes a famous opera singer.

Sunday began with a walk over to the Met at opening.

We checked out a beautiful exhibition on fashion & impressionism.

And then I was off to Blue Hill at Stone Barns, which was an experience of its own band will be shared in a later post.

Monday began with the most amazing blueberry pancakes with my fellow California photographer Sarah.

She has been bitten by the wanderlust bug and has been having beautiful, surreal adventures all around the world.

Then I headed off to DC and came back a few days later. Jesse made this masterpiece for lunch:

Dessert: red grape sorbet– literally tastes like frozen red grapes.

Of course the one day I picked for our rooftop lounge was the only day it rained. But New York looks pretty spectacular anyhow.

Jesse took this picture of Paul.

Pio Pio for dinner.

Saturday brunch at Kashkaval with Frank, a childhood friend.

A little stroll through Midtown.

The gorgeous New York Public Library.

Love.
